The Pool Installation Timeline: What to Expect from Dig Day to First Swim

Dreaming of a backyard oasis? A custom pool is an exciting project. At Outdoor Visions by Jeff Gray LLC, we believe in transparency. Understanding the typical phases and timeline helps manage expectations and makes the entire journey smooth.

While every project is unique, here is a general breakdown of what to expect during your new pool installation.

Phase 1: Preparation and Excavation (1–3 Days)

Custom Pool - Outdoor Visions by Jeff Gray LLC

The process starts with precision. We accurately mark the pool’s location and shape on your property. Then comes Dig Day, where our crew excavates the hole and hauls away the soil. The necessary equipment, like your filtration system and pump, is also delivered and placed on its pad during this initial phase.

Phase 2: Structure and Plumbing (5–10 Days)

This establishes the pool's permanent shell. We install a network of steel rebar throughout the hole, which forms the skeletal strength of the structure. The pipes for filtration, drains, and returns are laid out and plumbed. Next, concrete (Gunite or Shotcrete) is sprayed over the steel to create the sturdy shell. This shell then needs to cure and harden for about a week before the next steps begin.

Phase 3: Decking and Hardscaping (1–3 Weeks)

With the shell cured, we focus on the surrounding area. We install the top perimeter edge of the pool, called the coping. Then, we begin the installation of your chosen patio or decking material, whether it’s pavers, stamped concrete, or stone. Finally, licensed tradespeople complete the necessary utility connections for gas (heaters), electric (lights, pumps), and safety bonding.

Phase 4: Finishing Touches and Fill (3–5 Days)

This is the final aesthetic stage. The selected interior pool finish (like plaster or aggregate) is applied to the shell. This is a time-sensitive step, as the pool must be immediately filled with water to cure the finish correctly—a process that can take up to 72 hours. Once full, the equipment is started, and the initial chemical balance is achieved, ensuring the finish is protected.

Phase 5: Education and First Swim! (1 Day)

The last step is a thorough orientation. A member of the Outdoor Visions team will walk you through how to operate and maintain your new pool system, including pump operation, cleaning, and chemical management. Then, the moment you've been waiting for: Jump in!

Total Estimated Timeline: A typical new pool installation takes approximately 6 to 12 weeks from excavation to your first swim, though this can vary based on weather, permitting, and custom features.
